AI training pay and UK tax: the £1,000 trading allowance explained

By AI Training Jobs UK Editorial·28 Aug 2026

Is AI training income taxable?

Yes, income from AI training platforms is usually taxable as self-employment or miscellaneous income in the UK. But the £1,000 trading allowance means that if your total trading income from all sources is £1,000 or less in a tax year, you don't have to declare it or pay tax on it.

How the allowance works

If your trading income is £1,000 or less, you don't need to declare it. If it's more than £1,000, you can either deduct £1,000 as a flat allowance (instead of actual expenses) or deduct your actual expenses, whichever is better.

When you need to register

If your income exceeds £1,000, you may need to register for Self Assessment and file a tax return. The thresholds and rules change, so always check the current position on gov.uk.
